The historical landmark of Gingee

Gingee Fort - The prestigious historical landmark

Rajagiri Fort is the most prestigious historical landmark of Gingee. Its is one of the main tourist part in Villupuram district. Climbing the Rajagiri fort is always a good experience. Its is not an easy task, the fort contains more than thousand step to reach the top, All the step are made of rock of different sizes properly merged. The king called "Raja Desigh" climb the top using his horse. He is named as best horse rider. From the top, one see the beautiful scenery for greenish agricultural land and the breeze will definitely make you feel good for climbing more than thousand hard rock steps.

Winter is the best season to climb and visit Gingee fort. where at the top there is lion cave, and an king's place and small water body, in tamil language it is called "sunai" which means the natural water resource found between rocks. The water tastes good and it is naturally chilled even in summer, but now it is blocked for safety purpose.

And also there suicide or punishment point presented at the hill top. There is a small wooden bridge in the hill top, without crossing the wooden bridge one cannot reach the top, it is the specialty of rajagiri fort. There are stories like, if a person is convicted on mistake will be thrown from the wooden bridge so it is called as punishment point.

Rajagiri fort is one of high secured fort build in Tamil history. The fort was surrounded with wall of more than a km completely made of huge rock which cannot be tackled even by elephants troops. And there is "AGAZHI" outside the compound filled with crocodiles (now there is no water and crocodiles in AGAZHI) so no man easily reach the walls of the Fort, And we can see a cannon in the fort. There are some secret tunnels available in the campus, but it is not sure or visited any of those tunnels by my own. Hope it was all destroyed.

I have listened people saying the history of this fort, that a Mohal emperor has surrounded the fort fight with huge army, but it takes sixty days to capture the fort. Even people say there is secret tunnel from Rajagiri fort to vellore fort was there in that time. Gingee fort history is very interesting one.

Apart from all the above, there is one building in the fort campus which is "Kalyana Mahal" which means marriage hall. History says it was built for the king and queen to play hide and seek game. This is an very interesting construction one cannot find in any of the forts are palace in India, It has more than six floors less then 12. where are so many up and down staircase which makes you get confused, and you wound not able to identify the where you are started and which floor you are standing. It has to be experienced i am unable the express it beauty and interesting facts of the building.

And there is one Elephant pond, and bathing lake, grains storage, weapon storage, Anjenaya temple, one more hindu temple and an very old mosque is there inside the campus. A visit to Gingee fort will make you look back and admire the 13th century people tremendous work.
